The only clear marker seems to be the SN along with what chip was installed - under 300,000 and w/a LM308N and it was MIA, with the presumption being that it was prior to 2003, but no real guarantee of it.Proco rat serial number - with other Meh, thanks but I aint that concerned about it. So the date itself isn't very useful, and there's basically at least 5 years of transition time where it could have been made in either location. The reason I think such is the case is because I've seen at least one 'history of' web page that highlights how a '07 Rat differs from an older one, I think with the assumption being that it was MIC. I think it would then stand that '08 is used as more of milestone or indicator that the transition was done, and all units were then MIC.

So you STILL have MIA Rats then, but now the chip is the OP07, and the transition is on.but it could be either country. IOW, even the MIA Rats were transitioning from the LM308N to the OP07 probably prior to 2003, but it was around that time that I guess the conclusion could be made that all units had a SN over 300,000. So there's a bunch of transitional production Rats that I think the year was used just for the sake of simplicity. Apparently, the SN being under 300,000 actually is supposed to be an indicator that the pedal was made with the LM308N chip. Just thought it was worth mentioning as it goes against the general consensus.Īnyone able to confirm or deny? There was a transition period from MIA to MIC, as best as I can tell. This suggests to me that production of the RAT2 moved to China BEFORE 2008.

There is a signature on the inside of the casing with a date of June 2006.The serial number sticker does not state Made in USA and has a CE mark. There are no date codes stamped on the pots.It has the smaller knobs with the little cutaways. It has the small Proco logo on the front. It's a slanted enclosure with textured finish on the sides.I've just purchased a used Keeley modded RAT and here is a description of it:

I'm not convinced all of this info is correct.

Keeley Electronics also said at one time that they wouldn't mod RAT's after serial number 300,000 due to quality issues but they seem to be OK with this now. Also easy tell would be serial number and inside pics.įrom my internet searching, the consensus is that the Rat2 changed to a slanted box enclosure in 2003 and production moved from USA to China in 2008. It's still my main overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedal, lots of mids, sounds superb on every amp (even straight through a cheap yamaha. There is no accurate way of dating a RAT pedal by its serial number alone, but a timeline at the web site can help determine the general age of your pedal – see Rat Distortion.
